Nico Beunders is a project consultant with the Development Institute, Ghana. He holds MSC Sociology and is a visiting lecturer to NHTV University for Applied Sciences in Breda Netherlands where he spent most of his working life as a senior lecturer and consultant in sustainable tourism. He worked for SNV Netherlands Development Organization Ghana for three years as a senior tourism advisor and associate consultant. His work has been focusing on: Value chain analysis and development for tourism and other sectors and products; Consultancy on sustainable tourism development potential and feasibility assessment; tourism strategies in e.g. Ghana, Serbia, South Africa, Croatia; Tourism Destination management (conceptual design, training, facilitation and implementation) in Slovenia and Ghana; Acquisition and project management for training programs for MINCETUR in Peru; African Wildlife Foundation in Eastern Africa (Uganda, Ruanda, Tanzania and Kenya); GEF project for training of protected area managers in Turkey on integration of tourism strategies in management plans; EC High Impact Tourism Training project in Ghana, for Wetland Managers of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission in Ghana.
Niek has a rich professional life that has been developed over 20 years of international experience in sustainable tourism development as a lecturer, consultant and trainer. His passion is the interface between conservation of natural and cultural heritage, local development and tourism.
Niek has been living and working in Ghana for the past 4 years with his Ghanaian wife and three sons. Nature is his major source of inspiration and relaxation. He likes being outdoor and to go hiking, cycling, mountain biking or to do some physical labour and truly enjoys fine food and drinks in good company. He likes buying fresh products from the land and the sea to prepare tasty and healthy food.
